Passport Wait-Time Relief Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 June 2007
According to an exciting announcement from the Department of State, all U.S. citizens traveling to and from the Caribbean before Sept. 30th, 2007 don’t have to wait for their passport to arrive if they can present an official proof of passport application and a government issued photo id.

This is great news for travelers who have been anxiously crossing their fingers in hopes for their passport to arrive in time. Even those who have yet to apply for a passport can do so with little effort and use their proof of application to go anywhere in the Caribbean. You can apply for a passport at http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html .

Once you’ve applied, your Department of State official proof of application can be obtained at http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html , approximately 1 week after you’ve submitted your passport.

In addition to your official proof of application and government issued photo ID, you’ll need the following documents that are required by the various destinations in the Caribbean:
  • State issued birth certificate
  • Marriage License (If you are married and traveling with documents that have different last names.)
This temporary flexibility with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) was issued due to the unusually high turnaround times for passport processing. Where normal passport turnaround times run anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks, the recent surge in passport applications has kept applicants from getting their passport any sooner than 12 weeks from submission.

Don’t miss your opportunity to break for the Caribbean during this temporary travel window!

WARNING: The temporary adjustment to the current requirements does not mean that travelers can avoid the process of obtaining a passport  or fail to meet the entry requirements of the destination they are traveling to. Some individual countries in the Caribbean do require a valid passport for entry. Please consult the individual government agencies of the destination of travel and travel.state.gov for the latest changes. The application and payment is still required and must be traceable in the online system for the above documentation to satisfy travel requirements.
